Private Prostate PSA Blood Test, Early Reassurance For Men Over 40
Worried about your prostate, but do not want to sit on an NHS waiting list or ignore it and hope for the best?
Whether you have noticed urinary changes, have a family history of prostate cancer, or you just want to check things while you still feel well, a simple PSA blood test can give you early information about your prostate health.
At Holden’s Wellness Clinic in Doncaster (DN5) and Newark (NG24), we offer a private Prostate Profile that checks both Total PSA and Free PSA, with results usually in 24 to 48 hours.
What This Prostate Profile Checks
Our Prostate Profile goes further than a basic PSA blood test:
- Total PSA – the main prostate specific antigen level in your blood
- Free PSA – the unbound form of PSA, which can help refine risk assessment
- Calculation of Free to Total PSA ratio, which can be useful in discussions with your GP or specialist
Price: £89
Turnaround: usually 24 to 48 hours
Lab: London Medical Laboratory, CQC registered UK laboratory

Who Should Consider a PSA Test
A private PSA blood test is worth considering if you:
- Are a man aged over 45
- Have a father, brother or uncle who has had prostate cancer
- Are black or of African Caribbean heritage and over 40
- Have noticed changes in urination such as:
- needing to go more often, especially at night
- weak flow or difficulty starting
- feeling you have not fully emptied your bladder
- urgency or leaking
- Simply want early reassurance rather than waiting until there is a serious problem
You do not need to wait for a GP referral, and you do not need to feel unwell before you check.
Important, What A PSA Test Can And Cannot Do
It is important to be honest. A PSA test is not a perfect test and it is not a diagnosis.
PSA can be raised for several reasons, including:
- Prostate enlargement that is not cancer
- Prostate inflammation or infection
- Recent ejaculation or vigorous cycling
- Recent urinary catheter or medical procedures
A normal PSA also does not completely rule out prostate cancer.
What it does do is give you a useful starting point. It tells you whether your prostate markers look broadly in range for your age, or whether you should have a deeper conversation with your GP or a urologist.
We always recommend that any abnormal result is followed up with your NHS GP or a private specialist.
Symptoms Men Often Ignore
Many men delay getting checked because they do not want to waste anyone’s time, or they assume it is just age. Watch out for:
- Needing to pass urine more often, especially at night
- Sudden urgency or leaking
- Weak stream or difficulty starting
- Blood in urine or semen
- Dull ache in the lower back, hips or pelvis
- Unexplained fatigue or weight loss
If anything has changed and it has been on your mind, a quick blood test is a low effort first step.
