💊 What Is Norethisterone?

Norethisterone is a prescription-only hormonal tablet that can temporarily delay your period by mimicking the natural progesterone in your body. It is taken for a short time, usually around the dates your period is due, and your period will normally start a few days after you stop the tablets.

At Holden’s, this medicine is supplied under a private prescribing / PGD service after a short clinical assessment to make sure it’s safe and suitable for you.

✅ Who Is Period Delay Treatment For?

This service may be suitable if you:

  • Are aged 16 or over
  • Have regular periods
  • Are not pregnant
  • Are not using the combined contraceptive pill (you may be advised a different approach)
  • Do not have a history of blood clots, certain migraines, or serious liver problems

Our clinician will go through a short questionnaire in person to check your medical history, current medicines and risk factors before supplying tablets.

🧭 How the Service Works

  1. Book a private consultation
Choose Doncaster or Newark and a convenient time using our online booking system.
  2. In-clinic assessment
You’ll have a short, confidential consultation with a trained pharmacist or prescriber to check that norethisterone is safe for you.
  3. Receive your tablets
If suitable, you’ll be supplied with norethisterone tablets and clear written instructions on how and when to take them.
  4. Travel or event as planned
Your period will usually start a few days after you stop taking the tablets.

ℹ️ Period delay tablets are not a contraceptive. You will still need to use contraception if you wish to avoid pregnancy.

⏱ When Should I Book?

We recommend booking your appointment at least 7–10 days before your period is due or before you travel. This gives time to:

  • Complete your consultation
  • Start the tablets at the right time
  • Explain how long you can safely delay your period for

⚠️ Who Might Not Be Suitable?

Norethisterone may not be suitable if you have:

  • A history of blood clots (DVT / pulmonary embolism)
  • Certain types of migraine (especially with aura)
  • Serious liver disease
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • A strong family history of clotting problems

If any of these apply, our clinician may recommend alternative options or advise you to speak to your GP or a specialist.
