✈️ Jet Lag & Sleep Support (Melatonin)
Long-haul flights, time zone changes and broken sleep can leave you feeling exhausted, foggy and out of sync just when you need to be at your best. Our private Jet Lag & Sleep Support (Melatonin) service helps frequent travellers, holidaymakers and business travellers manage jet lag more comfortably and safely.
At Holden’s Travel Clinics in Doncaster & Newark, our prescriber / pharmacist will review your travel plans and medical history and, where appropriate, provide a private supply of melatonin to help you adjust your body clock and improve sleep after long-haul travel.
🧠 What Is Melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by your body to help control the sleep–wake cycle. Flying across time zones, especially on overnight flights, can disrupt this rhythm and cause:
- Difficulty falling asleep at your destination
- Early waking or broken sleep
- Daytime fatigue and poor concentration
- Feeling “wired” at night and sleepy in the day
A short course of prescription-only melatonin can be used alongside good sleep hygiene to help your body clock resynchronise more quickly after travel.
✅ Who Is This Jet Lag Service For?
This service is designed for adults who are:
- Travelling across multiple time zones (e.g. UK → USA, Canada, Caribbean, Middle East, Asia, Australia, New Zealand)
- Frequent flyers who struggle with sleep and recovery after long-haul flights
- Business travellers who need to perform well soon after landing
- Holidaymakers who want to make the most of a short break without losing days to jet lag
The clinician will confirm during your consultation whether melatonin is suitable for you.
🚫 Who May Not Be Suitable
Melatonin is not suitable for everyone. During your consultation we will check your history, current medicines and any existing conditions. You may not be eligible if you:
- Are pregnant, trying for a baby, or breastfeeding
- Have certain liver, kidney or autoimmune conditions
- Take medicines that may interact with melatonin (e.g. some antidepressants, anticoagulants, epilepsy medicines)
- Have a history of certain sleep disorders, severe mental health conditions or uncontrolled medical problems
If melatonin is not appropriate, we’ll still offer practical non-medicine jet lag advice to help you manage symptoms.
💊 What’s Included in the Jet Lag & Sleep Support Service?
- Travel & health assessment – review of your destination, flight times, time zones and general health.
- Medication suitability check – screening for interactions and medical reasons why melatonin may not be suitable.
- Private supply of melatonin (if appropriate) – low-dose, prescription melatonin in prolonged-release tablet form for short-term use around travel.
- Jet lag plan – practical guidance on when to take your melatonin in relation to flights, plus light exposure, caffeine and sleep-timing tips.
Note: This service is for short-term jet lag management only, not for long-term treatment of chronic insomnia or other sleep disorders.

❓ FAQs – Jet Lag & Melatonin
Is melatonin safe?
Melatonin has been widely used for short-term sleep support, including jet lag. However, it is still a medicine and is not suitable for everyone. That’s why we always carry out a full medical and medication check before supplying it.
Can I buy melatonin over the counter?
In the UK, melatonin for adults is generally available on prescription or as a private supply. Our service provides access to melatonin under the supervision of a prescriber / pharmacist, following an individual assessment.
Can I use melatonin if I’m already on sleeping tablets?
This depends on which medicines you are taking. Some combinations may not be appropriate. Please bring a full list of your current medicines to your appointment so we can advise safely.
Is this service suitable for children?
This service is primarily designed for adults travelling long haul. If you are considering melatonin for a child or teenager, please contact the clinic in advance so we can advise case by case, or signpost you to your GP where appropriate.
