Book Kilimanjaro Vaccines

💉 Recommended Vaccines for Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)

  • Hepatitis A — food and water protection throughout Tanzania.
  • Typhoid — advisable for street food, lodges, and camp catering.
  • DTP booster (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio) — ensure your 10-year tetanus is current.
  • Rabies — consider for multi-day trekking, rural exposure, or animal contact (dogs, bats, monkeys).
  • Hepatitis B — for longer trips, volunteering, or any medical or close-contact risk.
  • Yellow Fever — certificate may be required if arriving from, or transiting >12 hours through, a Yellow Fever risk country. Some travellers to Zanzibar are asked for proof when arriving from mainland Africa. Please call to confirm current availability and certification.

Not a vaccine, but essential: Malaria prevention is recommended for most of Tanzania (including approach towns). We advise on suitable tablets and timing.

Book Vaccines & Antimalarials

🦟 Malaria & Mosquito Protection

The summit is malaria-free due to altitude, but approach areas (Moshi, Arusha) are not.

  • Antimalarial tablets are recommended for most itineraries. Options include atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine depending on suitability.
  • Use 50% DEET or picaridin, wear long sleeves after dusk, and sleep under treated nets where provided.

⛰️ Altitude & Trek Health

  • Acclimatisation: choose a 6–8 day route to allow gradual ascent; avoid “quick” 4–5 day itineraries.
  • Hydration & nutrition: drink 3–4 litres daily, use electrolytes, eat regular carbohydrates, avoid alcohol and sedatives.
  • Listen to symptoms: if you develop headache, nausea, or dizziness, tell your guide. Early descent is the most effective treatment.

⚕️ Understanding Altitude Sickness (AMS)

Altitude sickness can affect anyone above 2,500m. Early symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, poor sleep, and shortness of breath, typically within 6–24 hours of ascent.

💡 Prevention & Preparation

  • Climb gradually and build in rest days where possible.
  • Stay hydrated and keep a steady pace; overexertion worsens AMS.
  • Recognise and respond early; don’t ignore symptoms or push on if you feel unwell.

💊 Acetazolamide (Diamox)

Acetazolamide can help reduce AMS symptoms by aiding acclimatisation. It should be used under medical guidance.

  • Typical adult dose: 125–250 mg twice daily, starting 1–2 days before ascent and continuing during ascent.
  • Discuss suitability with your GP or travel clinician — not appropriate for everyone (e.g., sulfa allergy, kidney issues).
  • Possible side effects: tingling fingers, mild nausea, altered taste, increased urination.

❓ Kilimanjaro — Quick FAQ

Do I need Yellow Fever for Kilimanjaro?

Not if you fly directly from the UK to Tanzania. A Yellow Fever certificate may be required if you arrive from, or transit >12 hours through, a risk country. Check your route and airline advice.

Is malaria a risk on the mountain?

The summit is malaria-free, but approach towns and lower camps are not. Use antimalarials and mosquito precautions.

Should I take acetazolamide (Diamox)?

It can help reduce AMS symptoms for some trekkers. Discuss suitability, dosing, and side effects with your GP or travel clinician before use.
